Country Profile
Nepal is an incredible country.  It is set along the edge of the great Himalayan mountains and bordered by India in the south and China to the north.  It is a land locked country which has no coastline.

Nepal is quite a poor country.  The average yearly earnings per person are about $850, compared to $36,000 in New Zealand.  Because of this Nepal has far less money to spend on things like roads.  The roads are a little bumpy!

Although Nepal is quite a poor country this is a place that you'll love to visit if you are interested in trekking, being in the mountains and discovering more about ancient cultures.  Every year many mountaineers visit Nepal to try and climb the mountains of the Himalayas.  Mt Everest is also accessed and climbed from Nepal.  Tourism and mountain climbing contribute a lot of money to this poor country.

Religion is an important part of Nepali culture.  Many people visit Nepal to see the temples and their spectacular architecture.  There are temples painted in gold, temples with incredible domes and even a temple for monkeys!

The usual food that people eat in Nepal is curry and lightly spiced food that is eaten with rice.  The food is not as hot and spicy as Indian curry.

The yak is an important animal that provides transport and carrying things as well as milk and butter for Nepali people.  In some parts of the country they even drink a yak butter tea!

Nepali people dress in very bright clothing.  Surprisingly they do not have very good foot wear.  Even the mountain people wear sandals most of the time.

I would recommend that you visit Nepal if you are interested in knowing more about an ancient culture that has grown up and survived for thousands of years in a mountainous environment.  Nepal is a country for adventure and discovery.
